PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a herbicide for paddy rice protection safe to paddy rice and exhibiting high herbicidal activity against weeds such as barnyard grass, or as a herbicide effective against Digitaria adscendens, Stellaria media, and the like through soil treatment and/or foliage treatment therewith in the field, therefore beneficial to field crops. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by formula I (R1 is H, a 1-4C alkyl or cycloalkyl; R2 is an alkylthioalkyl, alkenylthioalkyl, alkynylsulfonylalkyl or the like; R3 is a 1-4C alkyl, cycloalkyl or substituted phenyl; X is O, S or the like; Y is a 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, cyano, nitro or the like; (m) is 1-5), e.g. 2 [N-benzoyl-N-[2-(methylthio)-1- ethyl]caramolyl]oxy}-1-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]butane. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reaction between a carbamate derivative of formula II and a compound of formula III (Q is an eliminable group) in the presence of a base.
