PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing alcohol by subjecting aldehyde to hydrogenation reaction while reducing the costs of equipment and energy. SOLUTION: This production comprises: feeding an aldehyde mixture to a distillation tower and taking an aldehyde rich in straight chain aldehyde out of the bottom; dimerizing the straight chain aldehyde and obtaining a 2nC branched chain alcohol by hydrogenation reaction; further obtaining, as a distillate from the top of the tower, an aldehyde rich in branched chain aldehyde and having >=30 wt.% of straight chain aldehyde in the distillate; hydrogenating the distillate; subjecting the thus obtained mixture of branched chain and straight chain alcohols to separation and purification; and resultantly obtaining each of the branched chain alcohol and straight chain alcohol.
