PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide map data base update method/device which can precisely make a picture in the area of the signboard of a building, which is extracted from the picture of urban scenery taken by a camera, correspond to the model of a building in a map data base. SOLUTION: The picture of an area in a signboard is extracted from a picture taken by a telephoto camera 2. At the same time, the feature of a building group contained in the picture taken by a wide area camera 3 is extracted by a building feature extraction means 8. The building group whose appearance is predicted is predicted by a building feature prediction means 7 from a map data base 1 based on the position of a vehicle loading a camera and a camera eye direction. A building specification means 10 collates the extracted feature with a predicted feature. The building group contained in the picture of the wide camera 2 is made to correspond to the model of the building contained in the map data base 1 based on the result. The picture of the area of an extracted signboard is recorded in the record of the model of the applied building in the map data base 1.
