PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To divide an area of a document image whose structure is unknown without contradicting the logical structure of the document and to extract a longitudinal and a lateral writing document area separately. SOLUTION: The image processor 10 which extracts a document area by dividing a document image inputted from an image input part 11 calculates whether or not a document included in the input document image is a longitudinal or lateral writing by a document direction calculation part 13 and sets a border for dividing the input document image by a division border setting part 14 by referring to the calculation result of the document direction calculation part 13. Then an area division part 15 divides the input document image according to the border set by the division border setting part 14.
