PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material or an intermediate material of an intermediate of a medicine and an agrochemical, and various fine chemicals under a moderate condition in a high purity by using a cyanobenzoic acid alkyl ester as a raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing cyanobenzoic acid is to hydrolyze only the alkyl ester group of a cyanobenzoic acid alkyl ester of formula I [R is a 1-5C alkyl; COOR is in the meta or para position of the nitrile; X is Cl or F; and (n) is 0-4] (e.g. p-cyanobenzoic acid ethyl ester) in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonic acid salt (e.g. sodium hydroxide) (preferably at pH 8-12) for synthesizing a cyanobenzoic acid salt (preferably a cyanobenzoic acid alkali metal salt), and then acid-depositing by adding an acid to obtain the cyanobenzoic acid of formula II (COOH is in the meta or para position of the nitrile group). Thereby, it becomes possible to synthesize the cyanobenzoic acid by using an easily available raw material under a moderate condition in a high yield and a high purity.
