PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material or an intermediate material of an intermediate of a medicine and an agrochemical, and various fine chemicals under a moderate condition in a high purity by using an easily available and relatively inexpensive phthalonitrile as a raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing cyanobenzoic acid is to subject a phthalonitrile (preferably terephthalonitrile) of formula I [two nitrile groups are in the meta or para position; X is Cl or F; and (n) is 0-4] under a hydration reaction in an alcoholic solvent in the presence of a base to obtain (A) cyanobenzoic acid amide by converting one of nitriles to an amide, then convert only the amide group of the compound A to carboxyl group by adding (B) an alkaline hypohalogenous acid and/or an alkaline halogenous acid to obtain a cyanobenzoic acid of formula II. Further, as the cyanobenzoic acid amide of the component A, the acid amide prepared by another method is allowed to be used, and the amount of use of the component B is preferably 0.1-12.5 mole based on 1 mole of the component A.
