PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic material showing less reduction of its viscosity even in the presence of a high concentration of a salt, a surfactant, a reducing agent, an oxidizing agent or the like and under a weakly acidic condition, and excellent in properties for use and preservation stability of its viscosity by containing a specific acrylic acid-based copolymer. SOLUTION: This cosmetic material contains an acrylic acid-based copolymer having a unit of formula I (R1 is H or methyl, R2 is H or a 1-3C alkyl) and a unit of formula II [R3 is H, methyl or carboxyl; R4 is a 12-22C alkyl; AO is a 2-3C oxyalkylene; (p) is 10-50], and containing 1-20% structural unit of the formula II. The above copolymer is obtained e.g. by copolymerizing a monomer having the structural unit of the formula I such as an acrylic acid monomer with an ester monomer having the structural unit of the formula II such as an ester monomer of a 12-22C fatty acid alcohol with a 2-3C alkylene glycol ether, etc. The weight-average molecular weight of the above copolymer is 1,000-500,000 and its content in the composition is preferably 0.1-10%.
