PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately turn a work long in turning length such as a column shaped work and the like, and furthermore, enhance workability. SOLUTION: A work W is fixed onto the main spindle 14 of a lathe in a state that the tip end of the work is projected out by a constant length, after the work W is primarily machined by cutter 29 extended only by a specified length from its tip end, the work W is pulled out of the main spindle 14 so as to be fixed onto the main spindle, and furthermore, its portion having been primarily machined is inserted into a through hole within a work holding member 18 so as to be fixed by a chuck part 40, and under this condition, the work W is secondarily machined by the cutter 29 by a specified length L from the base end of the portion having been primarily machined. And after that, by the insertion of a portion having been machined in the work holding member 18 while the work W is being pulled out of the main spindle, the turning operation is carried out with both the end parts in the machining area of the work W supported.
