Device comprises directional light sources (8) for illuminating test pieces (6) arranged in such a way that shaded and clear strip type zones are created on the surface of the object. Scanning units (5, 7) are used to move the clear and shaded zones over the whole surface and a unit (10) is provided to capture an image of the zones in which clear marks in shadow zones indicate a defect.
