Apparatus for forming foodstuffs into a shaped compressed block comprises a tubular housing (20) and a former (10) adapted to closely fit within the housing (20). The former (10) has an actuating end (11) and a compression region at the opposite end. The compression region has a cavity forming portion (16) and a compression flange (14) to define a shaped compressed block (60) having a cavity in one end. The apparatus can comprise a slot forming member (21) to define a substantially radial slot (61) in the block (60). The slot forming member (21) can comprise a guide member extending inwardly from an inner wall of the housing (20) and which runs substantially the length thereof. The bait feeder (60) formed of the compressed foodstuff has a cavity (62) therein so sized as to accommodate a securing means (63) on a retaining element (65). The bait feeder (60) can comprise one or more distinct foodstuffs each of which can have a differing rate of dispersal in water. In addition to foodstuffs, medicaments or poisons may be also included.
