PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a small-sized variable focal length lens system which is suitable for high variable power with a small number of lens. SOLUTION: This lens system is at least provided with a first lens group G1 having positive refracting power, a second lens group G2 having the positive refracting power, and a third lens group G3 having negative refracting power. In the case of the change of a focal length condition from a wide angle end condition to a telephoto end condition, the lens groups G1 to G3 respectively move to an object side so that a gap between the groups G1 and G2 is increased and a gap between the groups G2 and the G3 is decreased. The expression of 0.28<f1/ft<0.48 is satisfied. (f1) is defined as the focal length of the first lens group, and (ft) is defined as the focal length of an entire lens system in a telephoto end condition.
