[Class 131.] Hair-waving apparatus comprises a clampadapted to be applied to a tress of hair adjacent the scalp and a plurality of curlers adapted to be mounted upon the clamp in parallel, one above the other. In the form of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 6, the clamp comprises bars 11, 12 of wood or other non- metallic material pivoted together by a pin 13, the bars being reinforced by bent metal strips 17 in the grooves of which are secured pads 18 of resilient material, e.g. rubber. Pads 16 of absorbent material, e.g. felt, are secured to the lower faces of the bars. The bars are secured in the closed position by a link 20 pivoted to the bar 11 and carrying a cam lever 22 adapted to engage a recess 23 in the bar 12. Secured to the upper face of the bar 11 is a plate 24 carrying a pair of sheet metal posts 42, 43 provided respectively with convergent side flanges 44, 46 and 51, 52, between which pins 31, 32 on the ends of the lower curlers 26, 27 are adapted to engage. The posts 42, 43 are also provided at the upper ends with slots 48, 54 adapted to receive the ends of the upper curler 28. The pin 32 of each of the curlers 26, 27 is provided with a ball 33, and the flanges 46, 52 of the posts 42, 43 are slotted as at 56, Fig. 5, so that, when the pins 31 are disengaged from the posts, the curlers 26, 27 can be moved to the position shown in Fig. 1, the balls 33 acting as pivots. A tab 57 hinged to the post 43 is provided to retain the lower curlers in position. The curler 28 is provided with a pivoted tongue 39 to secure the end of the tress, and with ratchet teeth 63 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 62 carried by a lever 59, the pawl being held in engagement with the teeth by a leaf spring 64. In operation, the clamp is applied to the root of a tress, the curlers 26, 27 are swung into the position shown in Fig. 1, and the tress is given one or more coils around the curler 26, the pin 31 of which is then engaged between the flanges 44, 46; the operation is repeated with the curler 27, the coil however being formed in the opposite direction ; the remainder of the tress is then wound from the free end upon the curler 28, the wound curler being placed in position in the slots in the posts and rotated by a key to tighten the curl. A tool comprising a flat blade having a curved end provided with a hook may be used to facilitate wrapping the tress around the curlers 26, 27, in which case the curler 26 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 5 and the free end of the tress is drawn through between the clamp and the curler by the hook, after which the curler 27 is placed in position and the operation repeated. In the modification shown in Fig. 21, the posts 71, 72 which carry the curlers are provided with parallel side flanges and the curlers 76, 77, 78 are provided with enlarged ends adapted to fit between the flanges, the post 71 carrying a leaf spring 86 having a hook-shaped upper end serving as a pawl for engaging the ratchet teeth 84 on the upper curler 78. The tress may be wound on the curlers in the manner shown in Fig. 5 by the use of the tool described above, or the hair may be wound on the curlers 76, 77 as shown in Fig. 21 by the aid of a tool having a pointed end projecting beyond the hook, the pointed end being pushed through the tress below the curler to divide the hair into two parts, the free end of the tress being then engaged by the hook and drawn through the parting. A heater for use with either of the above apparatus comprises a shell 97, Fig. 11, of insulating material and a sheet metal liner 98 surrounded by a heating element 99. The heater is adapted to be slipped over the posts on the clamp when the curlers are in position and is provided with spring fingers 104 to retain it in position. |
