The invention relates to a piston (1) which consists of a light metal alloy and which has at least one unreinforced ring groove (2) and at least one piston ring (3). The aim of the invention is to provide a simple means of preventing damage to the flanks of the groove. To this end, the flanks of the groove (4, 5) or the flanks of the piston ring (10, 11) are preferably configured so that they are curved in a radial direction when the piston is new. This curvature of the flanks of the groove or the flanks of the ring (10, 11) produces a contour which corresponds to the contour of a flank of a groove after the run-in process.
