PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the recording density in the track width direction in a recording and reproducing device of magnetic media, and to reduce a crosstalk from adjacent tracks. SOLUTION: In recording mode, the coercive rate of the magnetic layer of a disk is decreased by irradiating the disk with a light beam spot Bs 15 for assistance which has the effective diameter dsw smaller than the width w13 of the magnetic pole of the head, preceding a recording head 13 to make narrow the effective width of a recording track TKw formed by a scan by the magnetic pole of the recording head. In reproduction mode, the saturation magnetization of the magnetic layer is decreased by irradiating the end parts of adjacent tracks TKa and TKb scanned by both the end parts of the magnetic pole 21p of a reproducing head 21, which has wider width W21 than a reproduction track TKr with two light beam spots Bs25 and Bs26 for masking precedently over the reproducing head 21 to erase the records at the adjacent track end parts to form a guard band Zmk.
