The method involves performing an eddy current measurement on a wheel (1) of the vehicle (3) during operational travel. The eddy current measurement signal is evaluated to monitor the state of the wheel. The measurement signal is continuously fed to an evaluation unit (21) in the vehicle and/or to a second evaluation unit (23) in a stationary control point (25).
