PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of chipping and cracks by using an elastic grinding wheel, and providing a mechanism such as a pressure adjusting means for making the contact pressure to an optical element of the elastic grinding wheel very small load in chamfering, and keeping constant the load. SOLUTION: For chamfering a lens 3, a plate 9 is moved forward parallel to the axis of rotation of an affixing tray 1 toward the lens 3 through a guide 8 by a cylinder 7 as a grinding wheel relief driving means so that the side of an elastic grinding wheel 4 abuts on the end ridge part of the lens 3. At this time, the elastic grinding wheel 4 has pressure abutting on the end face ridge part of the lens 3 still kept to preset pressure by VCM 14 as a pressure adjusting means and a guide 12 capable of freely moving parallel to the axis of rotation of the affixing tray 1, so that even if the elastic grinding wheel 4 is pressed to the end face ridge part of the lens 3 by the cylinder 7 and the guide 8, if within the range of stroke of the VCM 14, constant pressure is kept. Accordingly, chamfering can be performed without very small chipping and nonuniformity of chamfering quality in machining peculiar to the fragile material.
