PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means which can easily sort many files into hierarchies and also can easily and fast select a desired file by preserving the file which is handled by a computer with the relation secured between the attributes of the name, pass, the date., etc., and a keyword that is extracted from the file contents. SOLUTION: A file that is handled by a computer is preserved with the relation secured between the attributes of the name, pass, date, etc., and a keyword that is extracted from the file contents. In this procedure, the file is applied to an icon of a file management device that is shown at an optional position on a display in step 1. In step 2, it is decided whether 'automatic extraction of keyword' is set. If the above setting is done, the keyword is automatically extracted. Then a window where the extracted keyword is confirmed by an operator can be displayed. In step 3, a retrieval index is automatically generated for the registered keyword in regard to the registered file.
