PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a bridge expansion joint as a top board joint section is not broken before it reaches a set breaking displacement and as the top board joint section is surely broken in the set breaking displacement. SOLUTION: A bridge expansion joint is quipped with mounting boards 13 fixed to bridge girders H and H opposed to each other or abutments, a top board 2 set so as to overlap the mounting boards 13 and 13 in a plan view and elastic shear deformations 10 connecting overlapping parts of the mounting boards 13 and the top board 2 to each other in a plan view. Hard boards 11 as mounting sections of the mounting boards 13 or/and top board 2 are fixed to at least the shear deformation section 10 on one side, at the same time, the mounting boards 13 or/and the top board 2 are connected with hard boards 11, the moving areas of the hard boards 11 in the direction of a bridge axis are controlled by control devices 4, and when an amount of approach/separation of the bridge girders H or the abutments is in excess of a controlled moving amount of the hard boards 11, joint sections of the mounting boards 13 or/and the top board 2 with the hard boards 11 are broken.
