PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the new subject compound having an alkenyl group or an alkadienyl group in a bicyclohexyl group and useful as a nematic liquid crystal material having a low viscosity and expressing a high NI point. SOLUTION: This fluorobicyclohexylbenzene derivative is expressed by formula I [R is a 2-10C straight chain alkenyl or alkadienyl; (a) and (c) are each F or H; (b) is a 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy which may be substituted, F or cyano], e.g. a compound expressed by formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained, e.g. by bringing a cyclohexanone compound to a Grignard reaction to obtain a cis-alcohol compound which is further fluorinated. Generally the compound I is not used independently but as a liquid crystal composition by blending with a usually known liquid crystal compound or a liquid crystal analogue or their mixture (a mother liquid crystal). When the compound I is used in the aforementioned liquid crystal composition, 1-80 pts.wt. of the compound of formula I is preferably included in 100 pts.wt. of the aforesaid liquid crystal composition.
