PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the whole of an electromagnetic contactor small and compact by enhancing the space efficiency of a case by somewhat altering the outline and shape of the case to change the disposition of return springs. SOLUTION: In this electromagnetic contactor, a switching contact assembly and a flat plate-shaped electromagnet 6 are incorporated one above the other into a box-shaped case 1, and return springs 10 or compression coil springs for pressing up a movable-contact support frame are disposed at diagonal corner parts in the case and by the side of the electromagnet. Spring accommodating parts 13 for accommodating the return springs are formed at peripheral corner parts of an upper case 1b by rounding the outline thereof outward of the case. Because this structure allows the return springs to be disposed in the spring accommodating parts formed at the corner parts of the case outwardly biased from the side of the electromagnet, the space for installing the electromagnet is accordingly increased to allow the area of a magnetic pole plate to be enlarged, based on which the number of turns of an electromagnetic coil and hence the height thereof are reduced and the sheet thickness of a movable magnetic core are reduced as well, in turn contributing to the entire height reduction of the electromagnetic contactor.
