<PICT:0450372/IV/1> In the production of chlorhydrins from chlorine, olefines and water, the chlorine and olefine are separately absorbed in volumes of liquid adapted to their solubility, the circulation of this liquid being so controlled that a chlorine solution of at least 15 per cent of saturation is produced in the absence of any neutralizing agent, there being no discontinuity in the liquid circulation. The reaction is effected in a tower 1 into which the olefine is introduced at 6 and distributed by a porous plate 2 or other means, and chlorine is introduced at 5 immediately before a pump 4 which circulates the solution through the tower 1 and side circuit 3, water being introduced at 8 and product withdrawn at 9. Inert gas escapes at 7. In a modification, the liquid circulation may be in the opposite direction so that it flows downwardly in the tower 1 in countercurrent with the olefine. Examples describe the production of ethylene chlorhydrin. Specification 445,011 is referred to. |
