The mat comprises at least three hinged mat parts (6,7,8) of which the first as holder adjoins the front wall of the boot which is formed by the back wall (14) of the fold down backrest. The first mat is connected so that a first folding axis (9)with the second adjoining mat part (7) is directly above the base (3) of the boot. The second and third mat parts (7,8) form a front and rear base cover which can be folded onto each other about a second axis (10) and then in this position can be folded about the first axis against the front wall of the boot into a storage position where they are secured by a holder (29). The first mat part is drawn up into an upper area of the back wall so that when the backrest is folded down to increase boot space the first mat forms a further base cover.
