The engine has a compressor (5), pref. connected to an exhaust gas turbine (13), arranged in an inlet flow path (4) for compressing the induction air with a charging air line (7) leading to an inlet collector (8), whereby the compressor is operated independently of the engine at least during the engine starting phase. An air feedback line (16) emanating from the inlet collector is controlled via a valve (17) and opens into the inlet flow path upstream of the compressor, whereby the charging air line and the air feedback line form a circuit (22). An Independent claim is also included for a method of starting an internal combustion engine, especially with self-ignition.
