PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counter weight attaching method capable of enhancing the excavation performance of a hydraulic shovel or the lifting ability of a crane without increasing an auxiliary weight. SOLUTION: A plurality of vertical holes for counter weight 11 fixing are horizontally drilled on the rear end of a turning frame 10 constituting a part of the upper turning body of a hydraulic shovel or a crane, in the case where an excavation amount is small and a turning radius need be lessened, the counter weight 11 is fixed frontward, and in the case where the excavation amount is large and the turning radius is large, the counter weight 11 can be fixed rearward. Otherwise a bracket for counter weight 11 attaching is erected on the rear end of the turning frame 10, a hole for counter weight 11 fixing is drilled in the bracket, in the case where the excavation amount is small and the turning radius need be lessened, the counter weight 11 is fixed forward, and in the case where the excavation amount is large and the turning radius is large, the counter weight can be fixed rearward.
