PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reflect alteration of environmental conditions on the recording conditions by comparing image data read out after recording a reference pattern and altering at least one of the recording time, recording voltage, and picture signal if the difference exceeds a specified range. SOLUTION: A selector 101 receives a picture signal and a lock signal at the time of normal recording operation, and a correction signal generated from a pattern generating section 102 and outputs any one of them selectively. The pattern generating section 102 transmits a monochromatic gradation signal, i.e., a reference pattern signal, and a output signal from the selector 101 is inputted to a recording section 103 where recording on a recording sheet is performed by controlling a recording head 104. An image reading section 105 reads out a recording pattern for correction to produce an image signal and a sheet feed control section 106 controls carriage of the recording sheet to carry the correction pattern recorded by the recording head 104 up to the reading position of the image reading section 105.
