The controller regulates three currents fed to the three windings (28-30) of the magnetic bearing. The controller has a three-phase current amplitude converter for computing, on receiving a signal indicating the axial position deflection in two mutually orthogonal directions, three current amplitudes for the three windings to cause a magnetic force to be generated to compensate the rotor's (6) axial position displacement.
