The invention relates to a method for verifying an electrical connection between a metallic housing part of a load element and a mass potential, whereby the load element is actuated by a control unit via at least one line bearing an operating d.c. voltage. In order to verify the connection, a diode is mounted between at least one of the lines and the metallic housing part in the inverse direction to the operating d.c. voltage and a verification current is generated by a measuring voltage which has an opposing polarity to the operating d.c. voltage and which passes through the diode and the connection to the mass potential that is to be verified. The method is also suitable for load elements comprising only one line and one connection to the mass which also bears the load current. In such a case, the diode is mounted parallel to the load element between the line and the housing part. A preferred embodiment is in the field of passenger protection devices in motor vehicles, in particular, for an ignition circuit which is coupled to the mass potential via the vehicle body.
