The apparatus includes a first channel (10) for carrying a working medium (12) such as ammonia down into the earth, and a second cannel (14) for returning it to the surface. The two channels form a system that is closed to the earth. The medium is supplied downwards into the earth via a throttle region (15,16) which throttles the substantially liquid medium so that it assumes an evaporation pressure in front of the throttle region. The medium behind the throttle region is completely vaporizable.
