PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately control ascent and descent of a purge box for capping a recording head in an ink-jet printer. SOLUTION: A purge box 65 is moved vertically to the direction of a recording head 52 with the recording head 52 moved to immediately above the purge box 65. A nozzle 52a of the recording head 52 is closed by a cap 108 so as to cap the nozzle 52a of the recording head 52. A pair of gears 97, 99 are supported rotatably on the same plane below the purge box 65 with a certain interval therebetween. Ascending and descending shafts 124, 126 are screwed each into a screw hole formed in the center part of the gears 97, 99. The upper end of the ascending and descending axes 124, 126 is fixed on a bottom part of the purge box 65. An intermediate gear 136 engaged with the pair of the gears 97, 99 is supported rotatably therebetween. The intermediate gear 136 is interlocked with a driving device.
