The system is of the type having a pressurized air supply which provides continuous pressurized air to a patient during the inhaling phase via a inhaling circuit (14,16). During exhalation the exhaled air from the patient is collected by an exhalation circuit (28) and is ejected through a valve (32). The exhalation valve is in the form of a balloon valve in which a regulated pressure is created so as to determine the opening degree of the valve. During the exhalation phase, the valve is fed with pressurized air from a pressure source (12) by a control circuit (34) which is fitted with a regulated discharge valve (44) via which a part of the air flow from the air pressure source is evacuated from the control circuit so as to regulate the pressure in the exhalation valve.
