The control system has four cascaded modules. An analysis module (52) receives data for delivery to a supervisory module (54) which also receives system variable data, processes it, and generates set values for engine and transmission. These are sent to a command module (56) which processes them and sends signals to actuators. An estimation and detection module (58) produces system variables.
