An apparatus and method for producing cement mix columns, for example, for constructing a retaining wall, is described. The apparatus includes a manifold (10) typically having a plurality of elongate hollow tubes (12) extending parallel in a linear spaced array. The tubes (12) are adapted to be driven into soil and have an opening provided at the bottom end (14) sufficiently large to permit cement mix to pass therethrough. At a top end of the tubes (12) a second opening (16) is provided to permit cement mix to be pumped into the hollow interior of the tubes (12). The manifold (10) is capable of being held in a vibratory piling hammer so that when the elongate tubes (12) have been driven into the soil to a predetermined depth and are then withdrawn, cement mix pumped through the tubes (12) can be injected into voids left in the soil as the tubes are withdrawn. The manifold (10) may also include one or more transverse plates (26) fixed to the tubes for stiffening the manifold and keeping the tubes in parallel alignment. A transverse plate (26) provided at the bottom end (14) of the tubes protrudes beyond the respective outermost tubes on each side of the manifold. In this way, as the tubes (12) are withdrawn, a groove-shaped void, formed by the transverse plate (26), is left in the soil both between the voids formed by the tubes (12) and on the respective sides of the voids formed by the outermost tubes. As the cement mix is pumped through the tubes into the voids under pressure, it will also tend to fill the groove-shaped voids formed by the transverse plate (26) so that a transverse spreading of the cement mix columns thus formed occurs. Reinforcing bars or mesh can also be inserted within the cement mix columns. When the invention is employed in the construction of retaining walls, the risk of soil collapse can be practically eliminated. |
