PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit with high image quality where no image quality deterioration is caused by smear correction processing, even when a smear component is not produced uniformly in the case of conducting smear reduction image pickup. SOLUTION: This image pickup unit is provided with a light diffusion element 17 in the vicinity of a movable diaphragm 3 in the inside of an image pickup lens 1, and the diffusion characteristic of the light diffusion element is changed in matching with exposure and signal read timing of a CCD imaging device 5 so as to conduct smear reduction image pickup, and when the exposure time is less than a smear limit time, smear correction processing is applied to a valid image signal on the basis of the smear component of the CCD imaging device detected by a smear detection section 8-1, and when the exposure time is the smear limit time or longer, no smear correction processing is conducted.
