Preparation of bis(alkynyl)bis(phosphano)platinum complexes, selected from bis(alkynyl)bis(phosphano)-), bis(alkynyl)bis(phosphinylalkylphosphano)- and bis(alkadiynyl)bis(phosphano)Pt complexes, comprises reacting a bis(phosphano)- or bis(phosphinylalkylphosphano)Pt dihalide with an alk(adi)yne in the presence of an amine, alcohol and copper(I) iodide (CuI). Preparation of bis(alkynyl)bis(phosphano)platinum complexes (I), selected from bis(alkynyl)bis(phosphano)Pt complexes of formula (PR<1>3)2Pt(-C equivalent to C-R<2>)2 (IA), bis(alkynyl)bis(phosphinylalkylphosphano)Pt complexes of formula (R<1>2P-R<3>-PR<1>)2Pt(-C equivalent to C-R<2>)2 (IB) and bis(alkadiynyl)bis(phosphano)Pt complexes of formula H-C equivalent to C-R<4>-C equivalent to C-(-Pt(PR<1>3)2-C equivalent to C-R<4>-C equivalent to C-)e-H (IC), comprises reacting a bis(phosphano)Pt dihalide of formula (PR<1>3)2Pt(R<5>)2 (IIA) or bis(phosphinylalkylphosphano)Pt dihalide of formula (R<1>2P-R<3>-PR<1>2)Pt(R<5>)2 (IIB) with an alkyne of formula H-C equivalent to C-R<2>(IIIA) or alkadiyne of formula H-C equivalent to C-R<4>-C equivalent to C-H (IIIB), in the presence of an amine, alcohol and copper(I) iodide (CuI). R<1> = (substituted), monovalent 1-24 carbon (C) hydrocarbyl, halogen, hydrogen (H), hydroxyl (OH), cyano (-CN) or thiocyanato (-SCN), linked to phosphorus (P) directly or by oxygen (O), nitrogen (N) or sulfur (S); R<1> = (substituted) monovalent 1-24 C hydrocarbyl or a silyl group -SiR<7>3; R<3> = a (substituted) divalent 1-14 C hydrocarbon group; R<4> = a (substituted) 1-24 C hydrocarbon group or a divalent silyl or siloxanyl group; R<7> = H, halogen, -OR<6> or (substituted) monovalent 1-24 C hydrocarbyl; R<6> = H or monovalent 1-20 C hydrocarbyl; e = 1 or more; R<5> = halogen, e.g. fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) or iodine (I).
