PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the dimension in the direction of the thickness of a case body for a drive apparatus and thereby to facilitate thinning of the apparatus in recent years. SOLUTION: This apparatus is equipped with a tray 6 which is so provided in an apparatus case body 1 as to be insertable and extractable and wherein an optical disk 17 can be set and with an optical pickup device 16 which is so provided as to be movable forward and backward for the tray 6 and conducts a tracking operation for recording tracks of the optical disk 17. The optical pickup device 16 is positioned on the tray extraction side in the state of insertion of the tray 6. When the tray 6 is extracted outside the apparatus case body 1, therefore, the optical pickup device 16 can be exposed outside the apparatus case body 1 immediately after the extraction of the tray 6 and, accordingly, the region of the movement in the direction of insertion and extraction of the tray of the optical pickup device 16 may be set in consideration of the stroke of movement of this device itself. Therefore a space for placing an electronic component such as a printed board, for instance, can be secured in the direction of insertion of the tray of the optical pickup device 16.
