The method involves generating an eddy current region in the material and detecting a voltage signal with a detector that is evaluated in a signal processor divided into real and imaginary parts. The square of the ratio of the imaginary to real parts of the difference between the complex voltage signals (VM, VL) for measurement with the detector on the material and at a large distance from it is formed and a calibration graph used.
