PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope system of good controllability such that an endoscopic image can always be set in the correct vertical position for display to an operator, irrespective of variation in the direction of insertion of an endoscope. SOLUTION: A scope holder 7 is provided with an encoder 8 for detecting the insertion angle of a scope 2 with respect to a horizontal direction and a motor 6 for rotating an image pickup means in a CCD camera 5 about the image pickup axis thereof according to angle information obtained by the encoder 8.
