PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetooptic garnet single crystal having excellent characteristics comprising a loss of <=0.1 dB in a wide wavelength band of 1,530 to 1,620 nm, a saturated magnetic field of <=72 kA/m, a film thickness of <=550μm needed for a Faraday rotation angle of 45 degree, and a temperature characteristic of <=0.07 degree/ deg.C. SOLUTION: This magnetooptic garnet single crystal is a bismuth- substitutional rare earth element iron garnet single crystal represented by the chemical formula: TbxGdyYb3-x-y-zBizFe5O12 grown on a (GdCa)3(GaMgZr)5O12 substrate having a lattice constant of 12.496±0.003Å. Therein, (x), (y) and (z) satisfy: 0.2<=x<=(0.714z2-0.529z+0.640), 1.1<=x+y<1.8, and 0.95<=z<=1.3.
