PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape excellent in electromagnetic transduction characteristics and running durability even when the surface roughness of a magnetic layer is reduced up to 1.0-2.5 nm for enhancing short wavelength output and the whole thickness and the thickness of a back layer are comparatively thinly formed and in preserving characteristics in wet-heat atmosphere, having high reliability for recording and readout of data and capable of being favorably used especially for recording digital data. SOLUTION: In this magnetic recording medium having the magnetic layer containing at least ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent on one surface of a substrate and a back layer on another surface of the substrate, the back layer contains a reformed carbonaceous granular substance obtained by treating the surface of a carbonaceous granular substance with fluorine containing gas at first, then with steam containing gas.
