Measuring the course of a borehole during drilling comprises determining each position with the aid of a measuring unit (12) consisting of a gyroscope (18) and acceleration sensors (17). The measuring unit is driven in a fixed reference system which rotates about the drill string and tool axis to compensate for the rotation of the string. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for measuring the course of a borehole comprising a measuring unit (12) and a drive unit (22). Preferred Features: The measuring unit can be decoupled from the rotation of the drill string. The gyroscope is a resonance gyroscope or an optical gyroscope such as a ring laser gyroscope or a fiber optic gyroscope.
