An airbag on its own can be either too rigid or too soft, depending on the size and weight of the person involved and on the strength of the impact. The new design of a knee area protection device comprises a shock absorbing unit (2), joined to the inner surface of the car body (1) with one end and to the housing (3) of the airbag (4,5) with the opposite end. In case of an accident the airbag (4) is activated first. The absorbing capacity of the second device is only required and utilized in the case of a heavy person or a serious impact.
