PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold crucible having a superior corrosion resistance to molten salt containing a chloride as its major constituent and corrosive gas and to provide a method for melting and holding the molten salt using the same. SOLUTION: A spray coated film layer 7 of oxide ceramics comprising ZrO2 by 20 to 80 mass %, the balance of Al2O3, SiO2 or TiO2 or these mixtures and having a thickness of 0.2 to 0.4 mm is formed on the inner surface of a cold crucible 1 including a furnace wall part 3. A glass coating layer 8 with a thickness of 0.05 to 0.4 mm may also be formed on the spray coated film layer. In the case that an item to be treated is molten and processed in the molten salt, it is processed under a state in which a solid phase of molten material is formed between the inner surface of the crucible and the molten salt.
