PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a car form detecting technology in a portal car washer, providing car form information of high resolution even with a small installation number of detecting means and avoiding mutual interference caused by the crowded arrangement of the detecting means. SOLUTION: The portal car washer is provided with a car washing device such as a car washing nozzle provided in an elevating manner at a portal frame 1 relatively moved straddling a car body 2, and a car form detecting means 7 comprising a group of numerous light emitting means 5 and a group of numerous light receiving means 6 disposed in a vertical direction, and the elevation of the car washing device is controlled on the basis of car form information detected by the car form detecting means 7. The car form detecting means 7 is disposed movably in a vertical direction in relation to the portal frame 1 by driving cylinders 10, 11 or the like. According to the change of the moving direction of the portal frame 1, the detecting height of the car form detecting means 7 is changed to accumulate car form information, and the car form information is combined to heighten resolution.
