PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader capable of changing image read resolutions while maintaining a distance between an image forming lens and photodetector arrays with high accuracy without performing complicated electric processing by providing a plurality of photodetector arrays whose pixel pitches are different, and an image reading method. SOLUTION: In this image reader 1 having a light source 4 illuminating the original 2, linearly arranged photodetector arrays 6 and the image forming lens 5 forming the image of the original 2 illuminated by the light source 4, the plurality of photodetector arrays 6A and 6B whose pixel pitches are different are arranged on the image forming surface 9 of the lens 5.
