PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an LBIST system in which an integrated circuit determines the longest channel of a scan core automatically. SOLUTION: An integrated circuit (10) comprises a combination circuit (13) and a plurality of scanning channels(SC) each having some number of elements (EC). A scanning channel having more than one elements includes first and last elements. In a scanning channel having one element, that element is both the first and last elements of a scanning channel. Selected elements are coupled to have an effect on the operation of a combination circuit. The integrated circuit further comprises a circuit (24) for inserting a specified pattern, while coupling, into the first elements of a plurality of scanning channels, a circuit (26) for detecting a specified pattern in the last elements of a plurality of scanning channels, and circuits (22, 23) for determining the number of elements in a longest scanning channel in response to the detection circuit.
