PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an R/D converter in which circuit is integrated easily, whose high reliability can be realized and whose detection accuracy can be improved. SOLUTION: Angle signal outputs 151, 152 in two phases from a position detector are converted digitally by an A/D converter 101. Angle data are calculated by a CPU 103 at every time which is clocked at a unit time. In a pulse output circuit 107, on the basis of the angle data DATA which is output at every unit time, data on its increase portion is converted into a pulse train. On the basis of the sign of the angle data DATA and on the converted pulse train, the pulse train in every direction of rotation is generated. According to the pulse train in each direction of rotation, the number of ups/downs of an up-down counter 109 is counted. The exclusive-OR of the least significant bit of its output and a second bit from the least significant bit is set as a first phase. The second bit from the least significant bit is set as a second phase, and pulse signals 161, 162 in two phases are obtained.
