PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially applicable simpler method for producing 3-mercapto-1-(1,3-thiazolin-2-yl)azetidine utilized as a side chain in the 2-position of a carbapenem compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 3-mercapto-1-(1,3-thiazolin-2-yl) azetidine represented by formula (I) comprises removing benzyl group from a compound represented by formula (II) (wherein, Ra denotes a sulfonyl residue; and Bzl denotes the benzyl group), then reacting the resultant compound with sodium thiosulfate, providing a compound represented by formula (IV), subsequently reacting the obtained compound with a 2-alkylthio-1,3-thiazoline derivative, the carrying out an acid treatment and further an oxidation, affording a compound represented by formula (VII) and subsequently subjecting the resultant compound to a reducing reaction.
