PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, a firmware update method, and a program with which a capacity required for storing optional firmware used in a plurality of optional devices can be reduced.SOLUTION: When a plurality of lower trays LTn are attached to a printer 1, the printer 1 stores in its ROM 14 LT firmware common to the plurality of lower trays LTn.
