PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for preventing burnt from occurring on a display unit in a projection type display system are provided to block an image from being displayed on the display unit automatically when the image continues so as to generate burnt on the display unit. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for preventing burnt from occurring on a display unit in a projection type display system includes a still image detector(205) and a system controller(207). The still image detector detects if a video signal is in a still state for a predetermined period of time when the video signal to be displayed on the display unit is applied, and transmits the video signal to the display unit. The system controller processes transmission of the video signal according to the detected result of the still image detector so as not to generate burnt on the display unit and controls the operation of the display unit.
