PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for manufacturing a thermally expansible graphite without deteriorating working environment, so called environmentally friendly and at lower manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: (1) This manufacturing method for a thermally expansible graphite characteristically comprises an acid treatment of making sour gas contact a squamate graphite having lamellar structure to generate an interlaminar compound between layers of the squamate graphite. (2) The device for manufacturing the same comprises a gas circulation device 1, a sour gas generation device 3, a sour gas adjusting device 5, and a fluidized agitater 7 to make sour gas contact the squamate graphite.
